An online gala, pocket poems, word play
April is bursting with life. National Poetry Month inspires playing with words and loving every minute of it.
Launched in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets (aka poets.org) National Poetry Month celebrates poetry to increase awareness and appreciation. It has grown exponentially into an extravaganza of word play and activity.
There is the challenge to write a poem a day for the month of April. 30 Poems in 30 Days. This rolling event is commonly called 30/30. A quick Google search will convince you to try several, join in with NaPoWriMo (National Poetry Writing Month not affiliated with NaNoWriMo) or just try it on your own.
April 18. My current favorite is Poem in Your Pocket Day. Started in NY in 2002, the idea is to share a poem you like. Post it on Social Media. Read it from your porch to anyone and no one. Downland a pdf to draw in response to it. Put it as a footer on your email address.
To me, poetry is profound, using words in creative ways to communicate deep meaning. Poetry describes our world as it should be seen, with majesty and detail, invoking memories and emotion.
So, pick an activity. Do one, do them all, or do nothing. Just knowing that poetry month exists, well, it just feels good to know people care about poetry and poets.
Do a quick Google search for poetry, and you will get an endless stream of interesting approachees. Here are a few to get you started.
